Habit # 6 is to synergize. In other words, together is better. Students learned how important it is to value other people's strengths and how we can learn from them. Students also discussed how by working together, even with people who are different than me, that we can solve problems and create better solutions that any of us could do alone.
While learning about Habit #5, Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood, students got to rate themselves as a good listener, not a good listener or somewhere in between. First graders then learned about the following four different road blocks to listening: Spacing Out, Pretend Listening, Selective Listening and Selfish Listening. Ask your child if they can explain these four different listening road blocks to you.
In order to be a good listener, first graders learned that we need to listen with our eyes, our ears, our hearts and our minds. To be a good listener, we need to listen BEFORE we talk. This week and last week, students have focused on Habit #4 - Think Win-Win. By thinking win-win, students learn that everyone has a role in the decision making process and that it is important to talk about a problem in order to create a Win-Win. Students watched a short video about a One Man Band and decided if the characters in the video thought win-win. This week, students read the story "The Rainbow Fish" and made a claim as to whether or not the Rainbow Fish thought Win-Win in the story. If your child has a problem to solve, see if they can solve it by thinking win-win!
First graders were introduced to Habit #3 Put First Things First with the Visible Thinking Routine Headlines. Students know that to Put First Things First means to work first and then play. Students learned that in first grade, we must work first and then play, otherwise we will use our play time to finish work that we haven't completed during work time. Today, Troy Union welcomed Jim Basketball Jones for a school-wide assembly. Jim talked about the importance of patient listening, putting first things first and beginning with the end in mind. He also reminded our Troy Union Eagles about why it is so important to use our manners. Thanks Jim Basketball Jones! Over the last two weeks, first graders have been working on Habit #2, Begin with the End in Mind. We have learned that to Begin with the End in Mind means to set goals and to make a plan to reach those goals. Each class has already set a bellwork goal, reading goal, and homework goal. Each student has also set a behavior goal. We all do things that make a difference in our classroom, so ask your child about their classroom job. By giving each person in the classroom a role, we are able to get everything done that needs to be done. Each class has also created their own mission statement (see below). We used the Visible Thinking routine Generate Sort Connect to create our mission statements. Students thought about the following questions, which helped us create our mission statements. What's our purpose for being here? What do you want our class to be known for? Mrs. Bender's Rock StarsMrs. Rowe's All-StarsMrs. Stransky's Super Kids Last week, Troy Union had our Leader in Me kickoff assembly. Eddie the Eagle even made an appearance! Check out the pictures and video below.
This week, students were introduced to Habit #1 - Be Proactive.
Students learned the difference between being Proactive and being Reactive. Ask your child about our experiment between the bottle of water and the bottle of pop. Which one should they try to be like and why? Students also spent time discussing Circle of Influence and Circle of Control. Proactive people focus on their Circle of Influence, which includes things that they can change or do something about. Reactive people focus on their Circle of Control, which includes things over which they have little or no control. Ask your child which of these fall into the Circle of Influence and which items fall into the Circle of Control: thunderstorms, attitude, eye color, feelings, height, turning in your homework, and a power outage. |
