In this unit of Social Studies, first graders learned about Needs and Wants. During our most recent lesson, students began discussing money and whether or not it is one of our basic needs. At the end of the lesson, we decided to pose the question to our families. What do you think? Do we NEED money to live or is money something that we WANT because it makes life easier? Please discuss this with your child. Your family decision (Need or Want) is less important that the conversation that you have at home. Ask your child what they think and ask them to explain why by asking the question, "What makes you say that?" Feel free to challenge their thinking by providing some of your own ideas. I'm looking forward to hearing all about your discussions!

Using the Visible Thinking routine Generate Sort Connect, first graders generated a set of ideas for the following two questions: What do we want our class to be known for at Troy Union? and What is our purpose at Troy Union?
Students then sorted their ideas into groups. For example, if reading and writing were both listed under our purpose, they could be sorted into one group called learning. After the classrooms sorted their ideas, they took the BIG IDEAS and wrote a classroom mission statement. Our mission statements are displayed on the HOME page of our website. Click HERE to see them! You can also see our mission statements in our classrooms and outside of our classrooms. In science, students Zoomed In on a picture and discussed what they saw and what they thought about the image. Students discovered they were Zooming In on plant roots!
Students generated a list of living things, sorted them into groups and then made connections to the groups. Take a look at some of the thinking below.
First Graders created questions about non-fiction texts and then placed them on a continuum. Students decided if the questions were thick (complex) or thin (simple) questions or if they fell somewhere in the middle.
Students from Mrs. Bender's class, Mrs. Rowe's class and Mrs. Stransky's class explore the thinking of various characters through the Step Inside thinking routine.
First Graders continue to practice making a claim and providing evidence through the Claim Evidence thinking routine.
